The story behind the Foundation On January 17, 2004, Bill Ferrier while walking on the beach, enjoying a cigar, saw something lying at the water's edge. Stepping into the frigid surf, he picked up what appeared to be debris -- a yellow laundry bag. As he pulled it from the icy water, he found it was not empty. Dragging the bag up the beach eager to discover its contents, his enthusiasm quickly turned to despair. Opening the water soaked sack, he found the body of a newborn girl, the afterbirth and the mother's undergarment. The baby had been strangled and discarded. After much contemplation, Bill knew he needed to move beyond this horrible discovery and shift his focus from himself to the infant. He began by naming her, Blue. One of Bill's primary concerns was what would happen to Blue if her mother and family went unfound. Looking for an answer, he contacted the medical examiner's office. Unable to get a definitive answer, he made it known that if the family was not found, he would take responsibility for burial arrangements. Bill and His wife, Susan decided to set up a fund to see that Blue and others like her receive proper burials. Additionally, in hopes of preventing future newborn fatalities at the hands of the baby's intended caretakers, the foundation teams at-risk young women with mentors who inspire them to delay motherhood through an emphasis on education. Women in the mentoring program are encouraged to remain in school and even further their learning beyond high school. The foundation provides women with information on all possible options, without judgment. Additionally, the organization refers clients for confidential counseling and other related services that assist in the decision-making process and affirm her choice. |
