Neonatacide: The Facts
- Neonatacide is defined as the killing of an infant within the first 24 hours of life.
- There are between 150 and 300 neonatacides committed annually in the US.
- 90% of the perpetrators are under 25 years of age.
- Less than 30% of these mothers are psychotic or depressed.
- Typically, those who commit neonatacide or public abandonment are young, unmarried, healthy, pregnant for the first time and not addicted.
- Nearly all perpetrators of neonatacide conceal and even deny being pregnant. The birth makes continued denial impossible and produces disorganized thinking, impaired judgment and in some case psychosis.
- To date, 46 states have established "safe haven" programs that allow the mother to drop off her newborn anonymously.
