Neonatacide: The Facts Neonatacide is defined as the killing of an infant within the first 24 hours of life. There are between 150 and 300 neonatacides committed annually in the US. 90% of the perpetrators are under 25 years of age. Less than 30% of these mothers are psychotic or depressed. Typically, those who commit neonatacide or public abandonment are young, unmarried, healthy, pregnant for the first time and not addicted. Nearly all perpetrators of neonatacide conceal and even deny being pregnant. The birth makes continued denial impossible and produces disorganized thinking, impaired judgment and in some case psychosis. To date, 46 states have established "safe haven" programs that allow the mother to drop off her newborn anonymously.
